Moodle LMS for higher education
Moodle is the dominant open-source learning management system in higher education. This page covers what Moodle is, which version to run, and how to integrate it with your SIS — the parts that matter at institutional scale.
What Moodle is
Moodle is an open-source learning management system (LMS) used by tens of thousands of colleges, universities, and CEGEPs worldwide to deliver online and hybrid courses. It's free to install, PHP-based, and supported by a large open-source community plus commercial partners. Its dominant role in higher education comes from three factors: it's free, it's flexible (extensive plugin ecosystem), and it runs under your control — no vendor lock-in on your student data.
Moodle versions — which to run
Moodle ships two feature releases per year and an LTS (long-term support) release every two years. As of 2026, the supported versions are:
- Moodle 3.9 LTS — older LTS, still in production at many institutions. End of support within 12 months.
- Moodle 4.1 LTS — current stable LTS for conservative environments.
- Moodle 4.3, 4.4, 4.5 — more recent feature releases.
Classeo supports Moodle 3.9 LTS and all subsequent Moodle 4.x releases, tracking the Moodle release cycle at each LTS.
What Moodle does well
- Course delivery — content hosting, activities (quizzes, assignments, forums, workshops), gradebook.
- Plugin extensibility — 1,700+ plugins in the Moodle Plugin Directory cover almost every imaginable need.
- Self-hosting — your data, your infrastructure. No vendor controlling your student records.
- Accessibility — WCAG 2.1 AA alignment in recent versions.
- Internationalization — first-class FR, EN, and multi-language support — important for Quebec, France, and Belgium institutions.
Where Moodle is weaker at scale
- SIS integration out of the box — Moodle ships with generic CSV/LDAP enrollment; institutional-grade SIS integration requires additional tooling. This is where Classeo fits.
- Multi-section course handling — meta-courses work but are clunky to manage manually. Meta-course fusion helps.
- Administration UX — powerful but operator-heavy. Classeo's super-user console wraps the day-to-day admin work in a simpler interface.
- Observability — Moodle's audit log covers the LMS itself but not SIS-to-LMS sync integrity. Classeo adds this.
